Ethno art from different countries seems to be very different in form but there is one thing in common. The function of this art nowadays is to be a trinket in a collection of its owner. These works of art are created because somebody wants to buy them. In form it may be very similar to what the people created in the past, but this similarity is an illusion. In the past the function of this art had nothing to do with exchange of money.

  • Calligraphy as seen from my bicycle
    Wlodzimierz Fenrych
Calligraphy in the West does not seem to be considered one of the fine arts. By art historians it is generally ignored and by tourists and art connoisseurs it is usually overlooked. Nevertheless, masterpieces of European calligraphy do exist. Some are in books, hidden in libraries of ancient manuscripts. Others are cut in stone or painted on walls, for all to be seen. Often the...

Do they still live in wigwams? This was a question I heard a few times some years ago when I came back from an Iroquois reservation for the first time. I answered asking a question - do you ask people who travelled to Norway whether the Norwegians still wear horned helmets? Why time should stop for the Iroquois? But how do they live? Perhaps this book, written after a few visit...

Although I try to prepare myself for the journey, read what can be read and to some extent I know what I am looking at wherever I end up, the most interesting things are the ones that are not expected, things I had no idea about before setting off. Indeed, these are the things worthy to be written about because if I hadn’t known about it, then the likelihood is that my reader w...
