En 1912, aparece El tapón de cristal, la quinta novela que sobre el ladrón de guante blanco Arsenio Lupin escribiera Maurice Leblanc. En esta ocasión y como lo sugiere el título que propone para la aventura el propio protagonista (El tapón de cristal, o Cómo no hay que desanimarse nunca), Lupin se enfrenta a una situación que por momentos parece sobrepasar su ingenio. En un momento de desesperación declara: “Ninguna empresa me ha dado más quebraderos de cabeza ni me ha costado tanto trabajo como esta maldita aventura”. La novela, además de mantener al lector en constante tensión ante el misterio del tapón de cristal y el inteligente adversario que debe enfrentar Lupin, también es una carrera contra el tiempo, limitado por la fecha en que ha de cumplirse la condena a la guillotina de un amigo al que aprecia el protagonista.Luego de muchos obstáculos, fracasos y retrasos, Lupin consigue en solo doce horas un éxito asombroso y espectacular.
