Aristophanous Thesmophoriazousai, or 'Thesmophoriazusae', is a celebrated comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. First performed in 411 BCE, the play satirizes Athenian society and the roles of women, particularly their participation in the Thesmophoria festival, a celebration of female fertility and agriculture dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. The plot revolves around the playwright Euripides, who, fearing the wrath of Athenian women angered by his portrayal of them in his tragedies, sends his relative Mnesilochus to infiltrate the Thesmophoria disguised as a woman. When Mnesilochus is discovered, he finds himself in a series of comic and absurd situations as he tries to defend Euripides and escape the women’s vengeance. Known for its wit, clever wordplay, and social commentary, 'Thesmophoriazusae' remains a significant work of classical literature, offering insights into ancient Greek culture, gender roles, and the art of comedic drama. This edition makes Aristophanes’ work accessible to modern readers, preserving the humor and cultural relevance of this ancient masterpiece. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
