Sur la base de nombreux documents d’archives et de ses propres recherches, l’auteur examine la relation entre les facteurs climatiques et la structure architecturale et urbanistique des villes ; il identifie les origines de l’ensemble cultuel ; il examine les types typiques de sources d’eau et révèle leur rôle dans la composition d’ensembles architecturaux de différents types (centres urbains, quartiers, résidences, palais, banlieues) ; il effectue une analyse comparative de l’architecture des sources d’eau dans la région de l’Asie centrale et dans d’autres pays de l’Est. La monographie couvre toute la période d’existence de la culture urbanistique dans la région, depuis les premières recherches écrites et archéologiques jusqu’à la fin du XIXe siècle.
