O aquecimento global é o aquecimento a longo prazo da superfície terrestre observado desde o período pré-industrial (entre 1850 e 1900) devido a actividades humanas, principalmente a queima de combustíveis fósseis, o que aumenta os níveis de gases com efeito de estufa na atmosfera terrestre que retêm o calor. Este termo não é permutável com o termo 'alterações climáticas'.Desde o período pré-industrial, estima-se que as actividades humanas tenham aumentado a temperatura média global da Terra em cerca de 1 grau Celsius (1,8 graus Fahrenheit), um número que está actualmente a aumentar em mais de 0,2 graus Celsius (0,36 graus Fahrenheit) por década. A actual tendência de aquecimento é inequivocamente o resultado da actividade humana desde os anos 50 e prossegue a um ritmo sem precedentes ao longo de milénios.
