Lo scopo di questo studio era valutare la capacità funzionale di anziani di età compresa tra 60 e 81 anni, portatori del virus dell’immunodeficienza umana (HIV) e affetti da sindrome da immunodeficienza acquisita (AIDS), con un approccio trasversale basato su un’indagine epidemiologica osservazionale. Gli anziani sono stati valutati in base a domini di funzionalità cognitiva, salute mentale e attività della vita quotidiana. La maggior parte viveva con l’AIDS, contagiata in relazioni eterosessuali con più partner, aveva più di 9 anni di studio e faceva uso frequente di marijuana. L’adesione alla terapia antiretrovirale è risultata soddisfacente e la perdita funzionale è stata significativa in quelli di età pari o superiore a 70 anni di entrambi i sessi. Fortunatamente, grazie alla terapia antiretrovirale altamente attiva, alle scelte di vita sane e alla definizione che gli anziani hanno di invecchiamento di successo, per molti anziani è possibile affrontare con successo l’HIV e l’AIDS. Tuttavia, gli effetti collaterali della terapia e l’evoluzione clinica dell’AIDS, associata al processo di invecchiamento, possono aumentare con l’età e ridurre le possibilità di successo, compromettendo la loro autonomia e indipendenza.
