Diabetes mellitus ist ein komplexes metabolisches Syndrom, das mit weitreichenden Störungen im Kohlenhydrat-, Fett- und Eiweißstoffwechsel einhergeht und mit einer chronischen Hyperglykämie verbunden ist, die bei allen Diabetesformen auftritt. Derzeit gilt Diabetes als Epidemie und zählt zu den fünf häufigsten Ursachen für Morbidität und Mortalität. Heilpflanzen blicken auf eine lange Geschichte der medizinischen Nutzung zurück und werden auch heute noch von verschiedenen Volksgruppen verwendet. Die vorliegende Studie wurde durchgeführt, um die antidiabetische Wirkung traditioneller antidiabetischer Pflanzen (Acacia nilotica, Azadirachta indica und Euphorbia prostrata) bei diabetischen Kaninchen zu untersuchen. Zur Induktion von Diabetes wurde Alloxan in einer Dosis von 150 mg/kg Körpergewicht intraperitoneal verabreicht. Es wurden methanolische Extrakte dieser Pflanzen hergestellt und den diabetischen Kaninchen 14 Tage lang einmal täglich in Dosen von 250 mg/kg und 500 mg/kg Körpergewicht oral verabreicht. Die durch den methanolischen Extrakt dieser Pflanzen bewirkte Senkung der Nüchternblutzuckerwerte wurde mit dem Standardmedikament (Glibenclamid, 5 mg/kg) verglichen. Am Ende der Studie wurden zudem die Serumcholesterin- und Triglyceridwerte der diabetischen Kaninchen bestimmt.
