L’Europe s’anglicise rapidement, en particulier dans l’économie et dans la production des connaissances. La science a certainement besoin d’une lingua franca, et l’anglais joue bien ce rôle, mais les universités ne se contentent plus d’utiliser la lingua franca, elles se sont engagées dans un processus de remplacement par l’anglais des langues nationales utilisées jusqu’ici dans la recherche et l’enseignement. Ce phénomène a des conséquences extrêmement négatives, en particulier pour un pays comme la France. Les argumentaires en faveur de l’anglicisation sont examinés dans ce livre, mais en réalité elle se met le plus souvent en place de manière spontanée, sans prise de conscience des enjeux, sans débat démocratique, pour obéir à une sorte d’obscure injonction sociétale. L’hypothèse est qu’il y là des phénomènes anthropologiques inconscients à l’œuvre, qui sont explorés dans ce livre.
