Johann Most (1846-1906), bekannt auch als John Most, war ein sozialistischer Redakteur, Agitator und Politiker der Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei (SDAP), dann der Sozialistischen Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAP), bevor er sich schließlich zum Anarchismus bekannte. Er war Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Freiheit. Die Gottespest, die am weitesten verbreitete Schrift von Most, ist eine atheistische und kirchenkritische Schrift, die in viele Sprachen übersetzt wurde. In Die freie Gesellschaft mit dem Untertitel Abhandlung über die Prinzipien und Taktik der kommunistischen Anarchisten spiegelte sich Mosts stetige Entwicklung vom kollektivistischen Anarchismus zum kommunistischer Anarchismus wider, von dem ihn erst in den 1890er Jahren vor allem die Schriften Peter Kropotkins vollständig überzeugten.
