The aim of this thesis is to analyse the work ’November Steps for Biwa, Shakuhachi and Orchestra’ composed by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1887-1952). Various approaches have already been taken by musicologists to analyse the harmony, keys and structure of Takemitsu’s works. In this master’s thesis, however, I will focus specifically on the extent to which his Japanese nationality played a role in the composition of the piece. I will also examine in more detail the ideas that Takemitsu wanted to express in this work.
