Die Natur unterliegt aufgrund natürlicher Phänomene und insbesondere aufgrund menschlicher Einflüsse vielen Veränderungen, die oft direkte und indirekte Schäden für die Umwelt und die Gesellschaft verursachen, darunter:Versandung, Überschwemmungen, Umweltverschmutzung, Abholzung und andere. Um die Ursachen und Auswirkungen der Überschwemmungen des Flusses Ibirapuitã in der Stadt Alegrete zu ermitteln, wurde eine lokale sozioökologische Diagnose durchgeführt. Zunächst wurden quantitative Erhebungen zu den ökologischen, materiellen und sozialen Schäden durchgeführt, die durch die Überschwemmungen im Zeitraum von April 2016 bis April 2017 verursacht wurden. In einem zweiten Schritt wurden die Maßnahmen zur Schadensminderung, Aktionspläne und Änderungen in der Stadtplanung identifiziert, die der Zivilschutz und die Stadtverwaltung durchgeführt haben, um die durch die Überschwemmungen des Flusses Ibirapuitã verursachten Beeinträchtigungen zu minimieren.Die Daten für diesen Zeitraum verzeichneten 219 obdachlose Familien und einen geschätzten Schaden von 10 Millionen Reais. Diese Daten sind wichtig für die Gemeinde, um Präventionsmaßnahmen zu ergreifen, die den Schaden für die Gesellschaft verringern, da sich die Überschwemmungen des Flusses Ibirapuitã leider Jahr für Jahr wiederholen.
