A natureza passa por muitas transformações devido aos fenômenos naturais e em especial aos provocados pela ação homem, no qual muitas vezes causam danos diretos e indiretos ao ambiente e sociedade sendo:assoreamentos, enchentes, poluição, desmatamentos, dentre outros. Desta maneira, com intuito de conhecer as causas e os efeitos gerados pelas cheias do Rio Ibirapuitã na cidade de Alegrete, foi realizado um diagnóstico socioambiental local. Inicialmente foram realizados levantamentos quantitativos dos danos ambientais, materiais e sociais causadas pelas enchentes no período de abril de 2016 a abril de 2017, no segundo momento foram identificadas as medidas mitigadoras, planos de ação e mudanças no planejamento urbano que a defesa civil e a prefeitura realizaram com o intuito de minimizar os transtornos causados pelas cheias do rio Ibirapuitã.Os dados deste período registraram 219 famílias desabrigadas e um prejuízo estimado de 10 milhões de reais, estes dados são importantes para o município adotar medidas de prevenção que venham a reduzir os danos causados a sociedade, pois infelizmente as cheias do Rio Ibirapuitã se repetem ano após ano.
