Diese Lektionen dienten oft als Rahmen für die zukünftige Ausrichtung der Agrarpolitik im Senegal.Ursprünglich auf die integrierte ländliche Entwicklung und die Diversifizierung der Kulturen nach der Dominanz der Erdnuss ausgerichtet, entwickelte sich die Politik in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren allmählich in Richtung Liberalisierung und Strukturanpassung. Eine Konstante war die Abhängigkeit von Getreideimporten, insbesondere Reis, trotz der Bemühungen, eine Selbstversorgung mit Nahrungsmitteln zu erreichen. Es wurden verschiedene Programme und Initiativen gestartet, um die lokale Getreideproduktion (Hirse, Sorghum, Mais, Reis) zu steigern, doch die Ergebnisse waren aufgrund von Faktoren wie Klimaschwankungen, Bodendegradation, fehlender Infrastruktur und finanziellen Zwängen gemischt.
