L’enseignement à distance est un domaine en pleine évolution, relativement nouveau, qui occupe une place croissante dans les débats scientifiques et fait l’objet d’études empiriques de plus en plus nombreuses. Cependant, les données disponibles sont encore insuffisantes pour tirer des conclusions définitives et les conceptions sur sa méthodologie sont diverses, sans pour autant être nécessairement divergentes. Au Brésil, bon nombre de ces études portent sur la formation en entreprise ou sur une technologie spécifique de communication et d’interaction, ce qui se reflète dans les outils d’évaluation développés. La promesse de l’enseignement à distance de démocratiser le savoir, en permettant aux personnes éloignées des grands centres urbains d’accéder à un enseignement supérieur de qualité, a abouti à la création de l’Université ouverte du Brésil et de son cours pilote en administration à distance. Cependant, les données présentées sur le projet pilote ne sont pas encourageantes, notamment en ce qui concerne les étudiants et la gestion du cours. Ainsi, tout au long de cet ouvrage, nous allons mieux comprendre la dynamique de ce cours.
