Il Saccharum Edule, comunemente noto come fiore della canna da zucchero, è un tipo di verdura. Ogni ortaggio, compreso il Saccharum Edule, ha un proprio beneficio. Tuttavia, poiché non sono state condotte ricerche fitochimiche su questo campione a sostegno dei risultati benefici, questo ortaggio è spesso sottovalutato sia dai ricercatori che dal pubblico. I benefici per la salute del Saccharum Edule sono attribuiti in parte alla sua composizione fitochimica unica. Questo studio è stato progettato per trovare il contenuto fitochimico all’interno del Saccharum Edule per analizzare il contenuto di composti bioattivi e attivi. Il Saccharum Edule è stato macerato con metanolo per estrarre i composti attivi all’interno del campione. Utilizzando la gascromatografia - spettrometria di massa (GC-MS) e i composti attivi, sono stati effettuati sette tipi di test antiossidanti, quantitativi e qualitativi. Nel campione erano presenti otto tipi di composti bioattivi: glicerolo, alcol, fenolo, acido acetico, acido grasso, acido estere e alcol grasso saturo. Per quanto riguarda i composti attivi, il Saccharum Edule ha il più alto contenuto di composti fenolici totali (572,46 mg/ml) e il secondo più alto è il contenuto di flavonoidi totali (21,17 quercetina/g) ottenuto dal campione.
