José Mármol nació en Buenos Aires el 2 de diciembre de 1817. Comenzó su formación académica en la carrera de Derecho de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, pero descubrió la política y decidió abandonar sus estudios. En 1839, durante el gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas, pasó varios días encarcelado y luego, temiendo por su vida, se fue a Montevideo, ciudad en la que muchos argentinos se habían exiliado. Mármol convirtió su obra literaria en su mejor arma para luchar por sus ideales y buscar la caída del gobierno rosista. José Mármol escribió Amalia casi totalmente en el exilio.
