Die Plasmaspritztechnik wird in großem Umfang für die Entwicklung von Schutzschichten eingesetzt, um die Verschlechterung kritischer Komponenten (Maschinen/Strukturkörper) zu verhindern, die unter verschiedenen Umweltbedingungen betrieben werden. Keramische Beschichtungen werden verwendet, um eine dichte und harte Oberfläche zu schaffen, die gegen Abrieb, Korrosion, Kavitation, Oxidation und thermische Barrieren usw. beständig ist. Plasmagespritzte keramische Beschichtungen werden aufgrund ihres besseren Verhältnisses von Festigkeit zu Gewicht und ihrer überlegenen Verschleißfestigkeit in den meisten tribologischen Anwendungen bevorzugt. Ein weniger untersuchter Bereich bei keramischen Beschichtungen ist ihre Beständigkeit gegen die Erosion durch feste Partikel. Handelsübliches Aluminiumoxidpulver, vorgemischt mit handelsüblichem Titandioxidpulver, wird durch atmosphärisches Plasmaspritzen auf verschiedene Metallsubstrate aufgebracht. Die Reaktion der Beschichtungen auf den Aufprall von Feststoffpartikeln wurde untersucht, und die Charakterisierung der Beschichtungen wird in diesem Manuskript erläutert und diskutiert.
