A remodelação óssea é um processo contínuo e complexo que ocorre ao longo da vida. A avaliação da densidade mineral óssea mandibular pode ser considerada útil, ou mesmo necessária, em muitas situações clínicas, tais como doenças orais e sistémicas, planeamento de implantes, avaliação e acompanhamento terapêutico, estudos comparativos de densidade entre diferentes tipos de ossos, estudos de osteoporose, ortodontia e até mesmo para o estudo de hábitos orais não funcionais. O ortopantomograma digital é barato, facilmente disponível e utilizado de forma rotineira na caraterização dentária completa do paciente que visita para tratamento dentário. Com este estudo, colocamos a hipótese de que poderá existir uma correlação entre as alterações de remodelação óssea mandibular e a densidade mineral óssea do calcâneo e, assim, estes parâmetros poderão ser utilizados como um método de rastreio alternativo e pouco dispendioso para avaliar a densidade mineral óssea e identificar indivíduos em risco de osteoporose e fracturas, bem como para o planeamento do tratamento dentário.
