Alphonse Bertillon est l’un des fondateurs de la criminalistique et de l’identification criminelle. Il a lancé le premier système scientifique d’identification, l’anthropométrie. L’observation et l’analyse des relations entre les différentes parties du corps étaient déjà étudiées depuis l’Antiquité, mais c’est Bertillon qui les a utilisées et adaptées pour la première fois dans le domaine de l’enquête criminelle. Parallèlement à cette innovation, de nouvelles méthodes sont apparues, qui sont encore fondamentales dans le monde de l’investigation aujourd’hui, notamment l’utilisation de la photographie pour documenter les scènes de crime et les preuves. Sa contribution a ainsi permis de découvrir, de condamner et de classer les récidivistes du monde du crime à la fin du XIXe siècle en France.
