Der Autor rekonstruiert die Entstehungsgeschichte, die interdisziplinären Grundbegriffe und die spezifischen Erklärungsansprüche der Allgemeinen Systemtheorie in Auseinandersetzung mit der Analytischen Wissenschaftstheorie. Die wechselnde Bedeutung des Systembegriffs in der Soziologie von Talcott Parsons ist als Bestandteil dieser Entwicklung zu verstehen.
