In der Chemie sind Alkaloide stickstoffhaltige, natürlich vorkommende organische Verbindungen, die ein Heteroatom Stickstoff in ihrer Struktur enthalten, und dieses Stickstoffatom ist für die Alkalität der Alkaloide verantwortlich. In Alkaloiden befindet sich das Stickstoffatom in der Regel in einem Ringsystem, zum Beispiel: Indol-Alkaloide, Chinolin-Alkaloide. In der Natur werden Alkaloide von einer Vielzahl von Organismen gewonnen, darunter Pflanzen, Bakterien, Tiere und Pilze. Es sind bereits mehr als 12.000 Alkaloide beschrieben worden. Auf der Grundlage ihrer Struktur können Alkaloide in Unterklassen wie Indole, Chinoline, Isochinoline, Steroide und Terpenoide unterteilt werden. Alkaloide spielen eine wichtige Rolle im täglichen Leben des Menschen, da sie in Nahrungsmitteln, Getränken, Arzneimitteln, Stimulanzien, Narkotika und Insektiziden enthalten sind und ein breites Spektrum physiologischer Aktivitäten beeinflussen. Selbst in kleinsten Dosen können Alkaloide starke biologische Wirkungen auf das menschliche und tierische System ausüben.
