In dieser Studie wird Usman Alis Einsatz von theatralischer Gewalt als Katalysator für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen untersucht. In einer von Gewalt geprägten Welt hat die pakistanische Gesellschaft mit tief verwurzelter kultureller und struktureller Gewalt zu kämpfen, die die Grundrechte einschränkt und das Leiden fortbestehen lässt. Usman Ali, ein bedeutender pakistanischer Dramatiker, setzt sich in seinen Stücken mit diesen Themen auseinander: The Guilt (2014a), The Last Metaphor (2014b) und The Odyssey (2016). Auf der Grundlage von Johan Galtungs Dreieckssyndrom der Gewalt - direkt, strukturell, kulturell - und Edward Bonds Theorie der theatralen Gewalt untersucht diese Studie die Natur und Funktion der Gewalt in Alis Werken. Die Studie zeigt, dass die miteinander verbundenen Formen der Gewalt, die auf Diskriminierung, Ungerechtigkeit, Vetternwirtschaft, Klassenbewusstsein und Missbrauch von Macht und Ideologie beruhen, einen Teufelskreis schaffen, der die Figuren ihrer Rechte beraubt und zu ihrem Leid führt. Alis Darstellung von Gewalt dient jedoch nicht nur dazu, die Trostlosigkeit darzustellen, sondern auch dazu, zum Nachdenken anzuregen und einen sozialen Wandel zu bewirken. Indem er die Zuschauer in extreme Szenarien versetzt, regt Ali zur Selbstreflexion und zur Erkenntnis des Potenzials für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen an.
