Considerando la necessità di ricercare soluzioni ottimali nel campo dell’ingegneria strutturale civile, questo libro si propone di valutare l’efficienza dell’algoritmo genetico quando viene utilizzato come strumento ausiliario per la progettazione strutturale preliminare. Ciò è pertinente perché, in questo contesto, i codici sono più semplificati grazie all’uso di un numero ridotto di variabili, facilitando l’integrazione del metodo nelle routine tecniche di progettazione. Sono stati sviluppati due algoritmi genetici: uno per l’ottimizzazione di un ponte pedonale in calcestruzzo post-teso con sezione a 'T' e un altro per l’ottimizzazione di travi di copertura con sezione a 'I' per un magazzino prefabbricato. Per valutare l’efficienza del metodo di ottimizzazione, le soluzioni trovate dagli algoritmi sono state confrontate con le soluzioni effettivamente realizzate di entrambi gli elementi.
