Algorithms of Fate: What Do I Already Know About This?    How People Calculated the Next StepSeries 'In Twelve Evenings'Vita Harwood~12 Lessons ~Tests ~Experiments~Answers ~Vocabulary~Further reading~Test your knowledge! We want to know what comes next. Sometimes the reason is curiosity, sometimes anxiety, and sometimes the need to choose between several possible paths. Across centuries and cultures, people have turned uncertainty into systems: counting cards, casting coins, marking figures, constructing charts, opening books at random and watching for repeated signs.Algorithms of Fate: How People Calculated the Next Step does not promise a formula for the future. It is an accessible investigation into the history, mathematics, semiotics and psychology of prediction. The book follows the moment when a random event becomes a symbol, the symbol becomes a story, and the story begins to shape attention and choice.Over twelve evenings, readers test the legend of Medici Solitaire, examine the probability of card matches, and meet the inverse problem of reconstructing an event chain. The course then compares the I Ching, Ifa and geomancy; considers Tarot, Lenormand, runes and bibliomancy; and separates the precision of astronomical calculation from the evidence for astrological interpretation. The final lessons explain why predictions can feel uncannily accurate, including the Barnum effect, confirmation bias, base-rate neglect and self-fulfilling scenarios. Readers learn how to write a testable statement in advance, keep an observation record and judge the outcome more fairly.Every lesson includes key terms, historical context, a revealing twist, self-check questions and a field assignment. The completed course also contains 120 answers with explanations, a general glossary, resources and recommendations for further reading and viewing.Written for curious readers aged 15 and over, this book will appeal to anyone interested in divination history, decision psychology, probability, symbolic languages and critical thinking. It asks for neither belief nor dismissal. It offers a chance to understand, test and decide what genuinely helps us take the next step.
