Dieser Text ist eine Einfiihrung in die Algebraische Topologie. Ausgehend von geometrisch-topologischen Problemen und aufbauend auf einer Fiille von Anschau­ ungsmaterial, das in Kapitel 1 bereitgestellt wird, werden algebraische Methoden zur Losung der topologischen Probleme entwickelt. lm Mittelpunkt steht aber im­ mer die topologische Fragestellungj auf eine Vertiefung und Verallgemeinerung der algebraischen Begriffe um ihrer selbst willen haben wir verzichtet. Mit den zentra­ len Begriffen Homotopie und Homologie werden tietliegende Eigenschaften topolo­ gischer Raume beschrieben. Um das moglichst einfach deutlich zu machen, haben wir die Satze nicht immer in ihrer vollen Allgemeinheit bewiesen. Ein Beispiel mehr war uns oft lieber als eine Voraussetzung weniger. Dieses Buch ist daher kein N achschlage-Werk. Viele interessante Gebiete der al­ gebraischen Topologie werden nicht behandelt. Wir hoffen jedoch, daf3 dieser Text denjenigen einen Zugang zur Algebraischen Topologie ermoglicht, die dieses Ge­ biet zum ersten Mal kennenlemen, und daf3 sie nach dem Studium dieses Buches weiterfiihrende Standardwerke lesen konnen. Wir wiinschen uns aber auch, daf3 dieses Buch denen als Arbeitsunterlage helfen kann, die ldeen und Methoden der Algebraischen Topologie in anderen Gebieten der Mathematik verwenden wollen.
