This work provides an overview of the history of Aizu and major figures of the past in Aizu province. The kantei (evaluation) of Aizu Shoami tsuba is discussed in detail with a review of previous studies done in this area. Examples of Aizu Shoami tsuba are shown in full color with close up images of workmanship and mei (signatures). A list of makers is given and it is the most complete record of Aizu Shoami Tsuba makers ever published to date. This list includes kanji and details such as period of manufacture and work style for many of the entries. Combining an overview of the cultural history of Aizu province with the specialized study of Aizu Shoami tosogu (Japanese sword furniture) makes for a highly engaging read and enhances our overall appreciation towards Aizu Shoami tsuba wonderfully.
