Este livro oferece uma visão do mundo psicológico dos agentes da polícia burquinense confrontados com incidentes críticos. Através de um estudo qualitativo aprofundado, examina as consequências traumáticas da sua exposição a acontecimentos extremos, num contexto institucional sem sistema formal de apoio psicológico. O estudo baseia-se numa metodologia que combina entrevistas semi-estruturadas e três testes psicométricos reconhecidos internacionalmente: o TraumaQ (avaliação do trauma), o WCC (estratégias de coping) e o DSQ-40 (mecanismos de defesa). A análise centrou-se em dois casos de polícias que sobreviveram juntos a uma emboscada terrorista durante uma operação. Os resultados revelam uma correlação entre os mecanismos psicológicos mobilizados e o grau de resiliência. Enquanto um dos sujeitos apresenta uma adaptação relativamente bem preservada graças a estratégias de coping centradas no problema e a defesas maduras, o outro apresenta uma descompensação acentuada, caracterizada pela alternância de diferentes tipos de coping e pelo recurso a toda a gama de mecanismos de defesa.
