This book aims to compile ‌as comprehensive a collection as possible of these ancient beast motifs‌, accompanied by detailed textual explanations of their origins, historical context, evolution, and applications. It will feature ‌line illustrations‌ and representative artworks-primarily focusing on ‌Shoushan stone carvings‌ (a renowned carving material from Fujian Province)-to create a richly illustrated, accessible guide to over a hundred legendary Chinese beasts. Through visual and textual narratives, the book seeks to unravel the symbolic and artistic significance of these mythical creatures in Chinese tradition. ‌Gao Yang‌ is currently an Associate Professor and Master’s Supervisor at the School of Art and Design, Beijing Forestry University.
