Adi Shankara (8. Jh. n. Chr.), auch Adi Shankaracharya 'erster Shankara' genannt, war ein indischer vedischer Gelehrter und Lehrer (acharya), dessen Werke eine harmonisierende Lesart der Sastras darstellen, in deren Mittelpunkt das befreiende Wissen um das Selbst steht und die die Advaita-Vedanta-Lehren seiner Zeit synthetisieren. Aufgrund seines späteren Ruhmes werden über 300 Texte auf seinen Namen zurückgeführt, darunter Kommentare (Bhāṣya), einführende thematische Darstellungen (Prakaraṇa grantha) und Gedichte (Stotra). Die meisten von ihnen sind jedoch keine authentischen Werke Shankaras und stammen wahrscheinlich von seinen Bewunderern oder Gelehrten, die ebenfalls Shankaracharya hießen. Authentisch sind das Brahmasutrabhasya, seine Kommentare zu den zehn Mukhya (Haupt-)Upanishaden, sein Kommentar zur Bhagavad Gita und das Upadesasahasri. Die Echtheit von Shankara als Autor des Vivekacūḍāmaṇi ist in Frage gestellt worden. Das zentrale Postulat von Shankaras Schriften ist die Identität von Selbst (Ātman) und Brahman. Er verteidigt das befreiende Wissen über das Selbst, indem er die Upanishaden als ein unabhängiges Mittel der Erkenntnis gegen die rituell orientierte Mīmāsā-Schule des Hinduismus betrachtet.
