Adi Shankara (8 cêntimos. CE), também chamado Adi Shankaracharya 'primeiro Shankara', foi um estudioso e professor (acharya) védico indiano, cujas obras apresentam uma leitura harmonizadora dos sastras, com o conhecimento libertador do eu no seu núcleo, sintetizando os ensinamentos Vedanta Advaita do seu tempo. Devido à sua fama posterior, mais de 300 textos são atribuídos ao seu nome, incluindo comentários (Bhāṣya), exposições introdutórias de actualidade (Prakaraṇa grantha) e poesia (Stotra). No entanto, a maioria destas não são obras autênticas de Shankara e provavelmente serão dos seus admiradores ou estudiosos cujo nome também era Shankaracharya. Autênticos são o Brahmasutrabhasya, os seus comentários sobre dez Mukhya (principal) Upanishads, o seu comentário sobre o Bhagavad Gita, e o Upadesasahasri. A autenticidade de Shankara ser o autor de Vivekacūḍāmaṇi foi questionada. A postulação central dos escritos de Shankara é a identidade do Self (Ātman) e Brahman, defendendo o conhecimento libertador do Self, tomando os Upanishads como um meio independente de conhecimento, contra a escola de hinduísmo Mīmāṃsā, orientada para o ritual.
