Le diabète sucré est un trouble métabolique caractérisé par une hyperglycémie résultant d’un déficit relatif ou absolu de la sécrétion d’insuline, d’une résistance à l’action de l’insuline ou des deux. Il s’agit d’un problème de santé publique majeur et croissant dans le monde entier, avec une prévalence mondiale estimée à 171 millions de personnes en 2000, qui devrait passer à 366 millions de personnes d’ici 2030. Les agents pharmacologiques actuellement utilisés pour le traitement du diabète sucré de type 2 (DT2) comprennent les sulfonylurées, les biguanides, les thiazolidinediones et les inhibiteurs de l’α-glycosidase. L’utilisation de ces agents est toutefois limitée en raison de plusieurs effets secondaires indésirables et ils ne parviennent pas à modifier de manière significative l’évolution des complications diabétiques. La forte prévalence du diabète et de ses complications à long terme a conduit à une recherche permanente d’agents hypoglycémiants d’origine naturelle. Les remèdes à base de plantes sont utilisés depuis l’Antiquité pour le traitement du diabète. L’Aconitum ferox (A. ferox) est une plante traditionnelle recommandée par la Materia Medica indienne comme plante antidiabétique, mais aucune étude scientifique n’a été réalisée ; cette plante a donc été choisie pour étudier son activité antidiabétique.
