A fibrose hepática progride para cirrose na hepatite alcoólica e produz disfunção hepatocelular, que é um fator de risco para o carcinoma hepatocelular. Este estudo investiga a toxicidade potencial do CCl4 iniciada pelo etanol como agentes hepatotóxicos na estrutura celular do fígado, glicogénio, conteúdo de ADN e certas enzimas, e também avalia o efeito de um certo antagonista de iões de cálcio, como o verapamil, na lesão celular hepática induzida por tetracloreto de carbono e álcool etílico em ratos. A microscopia óptica revelou que os ratos que receberam etanol e CCl4 combinados apresentaram fibrose e necrose das células hepáticas, fragmentação nuclear e resposta inflamatória. Também foram detectados distúrbios do glicogénio e danos no ADN. Por outro lado, os animais que receberam verapamil apresentaram redução da degeneração e necrose dos hepatócitos, e foi detectado um atraso na formação da fibrose hepática. Houve uma melhora acentuada na arquitetura dos hepatócitos, no glicogénio e no conteúdo de ADN. Estudos de microscopia eletrónica e bioquímicos parecem confirmar esses achados.
