Como país em desenvolvimento que está a caminhar para se tornar um país desenvolvido, a Malásia precisa de mais recursos humanos e conhecimentos especializados em vários campos relacionados com a ciência e a tecnologia. Infelizmente, há uma tendência de diminuição do número de alunos que seguem o curso de ciências no ensino secundário. A falta de motivação foi identificada como a razão por trás da tendência de diminuição do número de alunos que seguem o ensino superior e carreiras relacionadas com a ciência. Este artigo apresenta um livro didático de ciências aprimorado que utiliza Realidade Aumentada (eSTAR), com o objetivo de motivar os alunos a se interessarem pela ciência. O eSTAR foi implementado para complementar os métodos convencionais de ensino e aprendizagem de ciências nas escolas secundárias. Foi realizado um estudo de desempenho de aprendizagem com um grupo de controlo para investigar a eficácia do eSTAR na aprendizagem de ciências entre uma amostra de 140 alunos do segundo ano do ensino secundário. No geral, os resultados mostram que os alunos beneficiaram da utilização das abordagens de aprendizagem convencionais e do eSTAR.
