Com 98% do comércio mundial a ser efectuado pelos 159 membros da OMC e mais 24 países a negociarem a sua adesão à OMC, é uma questão de tempo para os restantes países - na sua maioria em desenvolvimento -, incluindo o Turquemenistão, apresentarem a sua candidatura à OMC, especialmente se quiserem desenvolver indústrias competitivas e aceder a mercados de exportação estrangeiros. O presente documento examina três condições que podem potencialmente ter um efeito no nível dos benefícios da adesão à OMC nos países em desenvolvimento ricos em recursos naturais e traça os mecanismos através dos quais estas condições influenciam o crescimento económico. Os resultados da investigação sugerem que os países que atingiram um maior nível de industrialização na altura da adesão à OMC estão mais aptos a obter benefícios económicos da liberalização do comércio que a adesão implica. Esta conclusão pode incentivar os países em desenvolvimento a ajudarem as suas indústrias a melhorarem as suas vantagens comparativas antes de entrarem num ambiente comercial internacional competitivo através da adesão à OMC.
