Method and world, for all practical intents and purposes, are really interchangeable terms; one without the other is inconceivable. Just as we have no conception, no experience of world, no personal contact with it, until and unless we develop for ourselves a world view - because until then we take world on hearsay and repeat opinion on it, parroting other people’s superstitions and falling in with their fears - so can we similarly not gain any knowledge, nor any understanding, of method, unless we acquaint ourselves, in the flesh, with the life of mankind, indeed until we familiarize ourselves personally and progressively with the whole range of sympathetic and compassionate being, especially of a contemporary order, otherwise we will forever fish in murky waters, mistaking the dubious for the genuine on account of our popularity and confusing questionable artifice with certain reality for the lack of a trustworthy comparison.

We have a right to expect two things from a novel: life insofar as it is a creation and more life because it is the creation which has the special task of setting forth where ’no man or woman has dared to go’. It’s an enterprise into the unknown so that more may be known. Stories are examples of craftsmanship; by them we want to be entertained and moved. Novels involve a certai...

Without intelligence no one and nothing lives. Without intelligence rain falls but never lands, eggs are brooded but never hatch, god is named but never worshipped. Here we move in the realm of reality as persons dedicate...

There is a literature that thrives on faith. What it substitutes for make-believe is an invitation in the direction of true faith. Even imagination, throughout, is in the service of faith. There is no need, so far as I can see, to give a particular name to that literature. If we were to call it evangelical literature, we would be totally misunderstood. All the same, it is never...
