Este livro procura compreender a dinâmica da institucionalização da luta moderna contra o paludismo na região Centro-Camarões. Por outras palavras, o seu objetivo é dar conta do processo através do qual o controlo moderno do paludismo foi progressiva e gradualmente estabelecido a partir da chegada do colonizador francês em 1919. Para atingir este objetivo, o livro utiliza uma abordagem metodológica baseada no neo-institucionalismo nas suas três variantes histórica, sociológica e de escolha racional. Utiliza igualmente técnicas de recolha e tratamento de dados. O estudo conclui que a luta moderna contra o paludismo na região Centro-Camarões está a ser institucionalizada através de sequências de acções que, no entanto, estão sujeitas a numerosas tribulações que tornam os seus efeitos no campo social ambivalentes. No final, mostra que, apesar destas muitas tribulações, a luta moderna contra o paludismo pode ser melhorada na área geográfica do Centro.
