Esta tese explora os fatores que impulsionam a participação dos países da América Latina e do Caribe (ALC) na Iniciativa Cinturão e Rota (BRI) da China. Desde a sua extensão à região em 2017, 22 das 33 nações da ALC assinaram Memorandos de Entendimento (MoUs). Usando a teoria da dependência e uma abordagem quantitativa, o estudo avalia os papéis da influência dos EUA, lacunas de infraestrutura e disponibilidade de recursos. Os resultados mostram que a influência dos EUA reduz significativamente a probabilidade de assinatura, sublinhando a dinâmica geopolítica. A disponibilidade de recursos está positivamente correlacionada com a participação, reflectindo o papel do BRI na institucionalização das dependências de recursos. No entanto, as lacunas a nível das infra-estruturas não tiveram um efeito significativo. Esta investigação fornece uma nova perspetiva quantitativa sobre a participação no BRI na ALC, destacando os factores políticos sobre os económicos e demonstrando a relevância da teoria da dependência na economia política internacional moderna.
