O presente estudo incide sobre a importância da educação pré-escolar para o desempenho dos alunos no nível primário 1 no bairro central de Zè. O objetivo geral é analisar os factores que explicam a recusa de enviar as crianças para o ensino pré-escolar antes da idade da escolaridade primária efectiva. A metodologia adoptada baseia-se num estudo documental, numa pesquisa de campo através de questionários enviados a 15 professores e 10 autoridades, num guião de entrevista aplicado a 15 pais de alunos e numa grelha de observação aplicada a 30 alunos do nível 1 em situação de sala de aula. Os resultados da investigação, realizada de 2 a 29 de abril de 2023, mostram que os alunos do ensino pré-escolar se adaptam melhor e mais rapidamente às realidades da vida escolar do que os seus pares não pré-escolares. Isto explica que os primeiros passos no jardim de infância desenvolvam as capacidades cognitivas, bem como as competências ligadas à socialização, à linguagem, à leitura, à escrita e ao cálculo, que são factores importantes para o sucesso escolar.
