Este livro explora a relação entre a flexibilidade na conceção de habitações e o sentimento de pertença a um lugar, reconhecendo a distinção entre a mera habitação e uma verdadeira casa. Defende que a falta de adaptabilidade na conceção de habitações diminui a qualidade, a satisfação e a ligação emocional, conduzindo frequentemente à instabilidade e ao abandono prematuro. Através de uma análise exaustiva da literatura, foi desenvolvido um quadro que identifica 21 componentes-chave da flexibilidade e 27 factores que influenciam a ligação ao local. Utilizando a técnica Delphi, foram efectuadas e analisadas avaliações de peritos. Os resultados indicam que os espaços multifuncionais, o mobiliário convertível e os layouts adaptáveis aumentam significativamente a flexibilidade, enquanto o conforto, a familiaridade espacial, a satisfação e a propriedade são fundamentais para promover a pertença. Este livro estabelece ainda correlações entre estes factores, levando à conceção de um complexo residencial flexível para comunidades de baixos rendimentos. Ao integrar soluções de habitação adaptáveis, este livro propõe um modelo escalável para melhorar a qualidade residencial e reforçar as ligações emocionais entre os ocupantes e os seus espaços de habitação.
