Desde 1936, o México tem-se destacado a nível mundial como um dos países mais solidários, modificando as suas políticas internacionais a favor das comunidades exiladas. Nesse mesmo ano, o Presidente Lázaro Cárdenas del Río implementou uma política de solidariedade internacional que resultou no refúgio de 25.000 exilados espanhóis, produto da guerra civil que teve lugar no país europeu e que trouxe consigo cineastas, pintores, escultores, arquitectos e académicos que encontraram um país com liberdades artísticas. Em resposta, surgiu uma geração de artistas que promoveu uma arte com menos conteúdo político e que respondeu ao contexto de mudança da época, procurando significado nas tendências internacionais, originalidade e novas formas de percecionar a arte, La Rutura.
