A era gúno-sármata foi marcada por turbulentos acontecimentos políticos. Este foi um período decisivo na história da Eurásia, resultado de um fenómeno histórico denominado grande migração dos povos. Entre as questões controversas da arqueologia gúno-sarmata estão a origem das culturas, a periodização e a cronologia, bem como a etnia dos monumentos. Para resolver essas questões, são utilizadas evidências escritas. No entanto, essas fontes são fragmentadas, incompletas e subjetivas. Portanto, a principal fonte para a reconstrução da história do período gúno-sarmata é o material arqueológico. Para o desenvolvimento futuro da arqueologia do Cazaquistão, é necessário fazer um balanço. É aí que reside a atualidade do tema: reunir, sistematizar e interpretar o material arqueológico do século II a.C. ao século V d.C. para o território do Cazaquistão que estamos a analisar.
