Keith Swanwick’s approach to music education is characterised by concern for musical and wider artistic processes, shaped by his experience as a teacher and performing musician. His selected works chart the course of his thinking, examining music and arts as essential for the development of mind, scrutinizing the nature of music education transactions, and responding to friction in the 1970’s between traditionalists and those pressing for creativity. They examine the nature of musical experience and the musical development of children, demonstrate the advancement of his influental - often controversial - developmental spiral, and chart the evolution of a theory of what is to ’know’ music.
