A Charkha, uma simples roda de fiar, simboliza a autossuficiência, a não-violência e a dignidade do trabalho na história da Índia. Durante a luta pela liberdade, personificou a resistência à exploração colonial e promoveu a produção indígena. Para além do simbolismo, sustentou os meios de subsistência rurais, deu poder às mulheres e preservou os conhecimentos tradicionais através das indústrias caseiras. Mesmo há algumas décadas, a fiação e a tecelagem sustentavam os rendimentos das famílias e a resistência das comunidades. Atualmente, a industrialização reduziu o seu papel prático, mas a Charkha continua a ser um emblema cultural de sustentabilidade e de uma vida amiga do ambiente. Reavivada através de instituições Khadi, iniciativas governamentais e programas de desenvolvimento sustentável, continua a oferecer caminhos para a capacitação rural e o crescimento inclusivo.
