Desmembrado da terra, do poder e da memória, o resultado é a destruição da base a partir da qual o povo se lança no mundo (Ngugi wa 2009: 28). O neoliberalismo apela aos países africanos para que vejam o 'mercado' como o centro da economia, privatizando e transferindo terras de milhares de camponeses para uma mão cheia de investidores. Mas temos dados que expõem as limitações do neoliberalismo: os perigos de reduzir os camponeses a agentes económicos com pouca margem de manobra política. O capitalismo quer dar poder ao mercado expropriando os principais agentes de produção e, ao mesmo tempo, espera que haja paz e ordem na terra (Falola 2005: 507).
