A África do Sul passou por uma grande transformação política em menos de uma década. Outrora isolada internacionalmente devido ao sistema de apartheid, que foi denunciado pelas Nações Unidas como um crime contra a humanidade, em 2002 a África do Sul era uma democracia liberal e abrangente, com uma constituição que foi frequentemente considerada uma das melhores do mundo. Participava ativamente em numerosas organizações internacionais, como as Nações Unidas, a Commonwealth e a União Africana, entre outras, e estava na vanguarda dos esforços para promover a democracia no continente e melhorar a imagem de África através da Nova Parceria para o Desenvolvimento de África. Tendo em conta estas mudanças significativas desde 27 de abril de 1994, quando a África do Sul realizou as suas primeiras eleições inclusivas, este estudo procurou avaliar a forma como os líderes empresariais da Grã-Bretanha, o maior parceiro comercial da África do Sul na altura, viam o país como uma marca internacional.
