В основе этой работы лежат экзистенциальные проблемы и профессиональный опыт автора, который он приобрел, работая учителем в системе государственных школ Сан-Паулу. Ее главная цель - обсудить проблему образовательной профилактики употребления наркотиков в школьной среде. Для этого необходимо определить рамки и социокультурные аспекты, присущие данной проблеме, что подразумевает понимание причинно-следственных связей между феноменом употребления наркотиков и более широкими социальными процессами. Таким образом, исследование ставит перед собой задачу определить предпосылки для создания школьного проекта, направленного на профилактику употребления наркотиков. Во-вторых, в нем предпринята попытка наладить диалог со школой, расположенной в столичном регионе Большого Сан-Паулу, в одном из самых жестоких районов города, с историей массовых убийств, 'комендантского часа' и войн между наркоторговцами, и изучить, в какой степени и каким образом эти предположения подтверждаются в повседневной педагогической работе школы.
