La Libération de l’Alsace, annexée par l’Allemagne nazie en 1940, a duré aussi longtemps que celle du reste du territoire français. A la tête du groupe d’armées 'Oberrhein' dont la 19e armée fait partie, Heinrich Himmler donne une consigne de combat particulière aux hommes qui tiennent la poche de Colmar : 'L’armée tiendra jusqu’au dernier'. Pourtant, beaucoup de soldats refusent de sacrifier leur vie pour une cause qu’ils savent perdue. Epuisée, la 19e armée s’effrite sous la pression des Alliés. Une relecture de la poche de Colmar au regard des acquis de la recherche en sciences historiques permet de mieux saisir le sens de ces affrontements opiniâtres, caractéristiques de la fin du conflit.
