El título del libro procede de la historia alegórica de John Bunyan El progreso del peregrino, publicada por vez primera en 1678 y aún leída ampliamente en la época de la novela de Thackeray. La feria de las vanidades se refiere a una parada en el progreso del peregrino: una feria interminable en una ciudad llamada Vanidad, que pretendía representar la atracción pecaminosa del hombre por las cosas mundanas.
