Miejskie szkoły średnie, do których uczęszczają głównie uczniowie zagrożeni, nie radzą sobie zbyt dobrze; nieproporcjonalnie duża liczba dzieci z mniejszości etnicznych i ubogich białych dzieci porzuca naukę. Celem tego badania opartego na metodach mieszanych było zbadanie skuteczności praktyk przywódczych i inicjatyw zapobiegania porzucaniu nauki w zmniejszaniu wskaźników porzucania nauki w 2 szkołach miejskich. Badanie to opierało się na literaturze empirycznej dotyczącej różnych praktyk przywódczych, które okazały się skuteczne. W części jakościowej badania zastosowano projekt studium przypadku, w ramach którego 5 liderów administracyjnych wzięło udział w pogłębionych wywiadach, które pozwoliły uchwycić istotę ich przemyśleń na temat zarządzania, sposobów przedstawiania przywództwa oraz ich wkładu w efektywność organizacyjną. Dane ilościowe uzyskano dzięki ankietom w stylu Likerta, wypełnionym przez celową próbę 195 uczniów i 7 liderów administracyjnych. W analizie odpowiedzi udzielonych w wywiadach zastosowano kodowanie i tworzenie kategorii, a w przypadku odpowiedzi udzielonych w ankietach zastosowano statystykę opisową.
