Soziale Konflikte und Kontroversen um Mahnmale und zeitgenössische Außenskulpturen werden anhand von Fallbeispielen untersucht, die eine Diskrepanz zwischen den mit einer Aufstellung verfolgten Wirkungsabsichten und den Interessen mobilisierter Bevölkerungsgruppen aufzeigen. Entscheidend für das Vorgehen ist der in der Arbeit entwickelte Untersuchungsansatz, Kunst im Außenraum als soziales Ereignis zu analysieren. Das Handeln der Akteure, die an der Aufstellung und Rezeption von Mahnmalen und zeitgenössischen Außenskulpturen beteiligt sind, werden zum eigentlichen Untersuchungsgegenstand erklärt. Wie und mit welchen Deutungen Konflikte um ’Kunst im Außenraum’ verhandelt werden und was dies über gesellschaftliche Verhältnisse aussagt, ist ausschlaggebend für diese soziologische Studie.
